I joined Rocky Mountain Self Defense and Fitness May 1, 2013. After some research and overcoming a little intimidation I promised myself I would give Krav Maga an honest attempt. What did I have to lose? I’m retired, have some spare time (Krav is designed for the student to advance quickly without spending endless hours training), I wanted to improve my conditioning and learn a proven self defense method Edit- if not for me, for my family especially my grandchildren.
Now, 6 months later, Krav Maga has become an important part of my life. I love every minute of it, even the tough workouts. I attend 2 to 3 times a week and actually feel guilty if I miss for any reason.
Rocky Mountain owner and head Krav instructor John Hallett has a unique ability to instruct and convey details on the techniques he teaches. He is a “high level” Krav practitioner and excellent instructor. After attending a few of his classes you’ll see his passion and love of teaching, no class is ever the same.
I’ve worked out with kids half my age, students older than me, instructors and advanced students. I can honestly say I have always felt welcomed and supported!
I highly recommend Rocky Mountain to anyone wanting to change their life for the better. Come in for a free class; you have nothing to lose!
Early Tuesday morning I was searching for a suspect in Colorado Springs, and found him crossing the road in front of my patrol car. I used poor judgment in my contact distance and pulled way too close to the guy. To make matters worse, as I exited, my car door stripped my taser out of my hand. Before I knew it, the 6’1″ 240 lb suspect on meth was right in front of me looking to fight. By instinct, I went for the groin kick, which was enough to distract him long enough to pin him to my car. He started to throw elbows behind him, so I stepped off line and gave him a right hook to the face, cutting him pretty badly (later 5 stitches). He came at me and I used my Judo to sweep him. Even on the ground and covered in blood, he continued to try and get up. By this time we were all over the road and there was still light traffic so I broke contact with him. I drew my taser and ended up hitting him in the back as he tried to run.
Just wanted to extend a thanks for the instruction you gave me last year. I still use your shadow boxing warmup to include knees and groin kicks. The fight would have been different if it weren’t for this. I also always remember the aggressive nature of Krav, when it comes to my work on the street. Two years ago I would have tried to grapple before I strike, which would have been bad for me considering this guys strength on the meth.
Your Krav Maga saved me that night.
Thanks so much!
We wanted to let you know that we think you do such a great job with the little kids in Krav Maga. We talk about it all the time when we hear you teaching them while we are getting ready for Crossfit. Neither of us would have the patience for it. You handle them so well, especially when they aren’t listening and following the rules. It’s great to hear you teaching them manners and respect with authority because it seems like no one’s got the guts to do that these days, not even parents and school teachers.
We just love Crossfit too. It’s been a great thing for us to do together as a family, especially having older kids. Kirsten said she feels like she has a personal trainer. Though she did “dry land” workouts with swim team, they don’t teach them correct form even on something as simple as squats. We have also had fun and look forward to the social nights. I told Jenny that within the first few weeks of going to the gym, we felt like we had a better relationship with people there than with the people we’ve attended church with for 11 years. Everyone is just down-to-earth, friendly, and encouraging. We have really enjoyed the people, the exercise, and you, Joe, and Jenny. My friends regularly try to convince me to go back to a regular gym to workout with them, but they have come to realize that next to my family, I love Crossfit most!

I have been in federal law enforcement for twelve years. In that time, I have attended defensive tactics training on a regular basis and I have also taught students as a certified instructor. In my experience, Krav Maga is the most practical and effective self defense training I have seen. I recommend Krav Maga to any law enforcement officer who wants to increase their defensive tactics experience and to members of the public as a part of their personal safety and fitness experience. John Hallett & staff are outstanding instructor’s.
Thanks for putting Zach’s membership on hold. I had to lift Zach after he broke his leg to get him in the house and unload his bikes off the truck. Never would have been able to do that without Crossfit!
I was curious about martial arts but wasn’t interested in belts and routines (katas). Krav Maga is what I was looking for, it’s a no-nonsense system that is easy to learn. I had never done martial arts but John and Britt are excellent teachers that take the time to work with you. I learned quickly that my ability to improve would depend on my level of fitness. I had spent the previous year and a half caught up in work and was in very poor shape. I started Cross-Fit and made rapid improvements. I wish I had found out about cross fit when I was younger. It is more effective, more time efficient, and I have achieved a higher fitness level than I ever did through weights, cycling, or other traditional gym activities. The classes are fun, fast, and never boring. I would strongly recommend it to anyone with a teen interested in lifting weights. They will attain the same or similar results in overall strength with much less risk of injury.
Thanks to everyone at RMSDF,
The training has been great and I enjoy it very much. I am looking forward to my continual training at Rocky Mountain Krav Maga. I learned more about defending myself in one month then the training I received as a police officer. Thanks
Thanks so much for the workshop! My kids loved it and were totally sore today. Attached please find a testimonial for your web page. If you’d like any changes I’d be happy to add more or take anything out. I’ll give you a shout in January and hopefully we can workout a date for next semester. Have a great holiday and thanks again!
